The Micro-USB connector is now being widely adopted by cell phone manufacturers and is present on many Android devices. These include various types of battery chargers, allowing Micro-USB to be the single external cable link. Micro-USB connectors can also be found on a multitude of other devices such as GPS systems, PDAs and digital cameras.

The Micro-USB connector is rated for 10,000 connect-disconnect cycles which is significantly more than the Mini plug design. Micro USB is also smaller than the USB Mini plug. The USB Micro-B plug is approximately 6.85 mm x 1.8 mm. Comparatively a USB Mini-B plug is approximately 7mm x 3mm.

How can I tell the different USB connectors and versions apart?

The major distinctive feature of USB 3.0 connectors is that they are typically blue in color internally while USB 2.0 connectors tend to be back or white. This can be seen in our chart below.

For USB 2.0 there are several versions of Mini/Micro that are similar in size and number of pins. The most common of these are USB Mini-B 5 pin and USB Micro-B. The main visual difference between these two connectors is in the sides of these connectors. The Mini-B connector features a stepped design while the Micro USB edge is straight.
